Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) is established in August, 1974 according
to the instructions and widespread thoughts of Founding Father of Nations of
Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as because of realizing
the importance of statistics in making plans, development and monitoring
progress by integrating four statistical offices under different ministries
(Bureau of Statistics under planning ministry, Agriculture Bureau of Statistics
and Agriculture census commission under Agriculture ministry, Population Census
commission under Home ministry) after the struggle of independence in 1971.
During that time, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) had 23 regional
Statistical offices. After that from July, 2013 eight divisional and 64 district
Statistical offices have been constructed by abolishing the former 23 regional
Statistical offices. At present the divisional Statistical office is directed by a
Joint Director. And District Statistical office is directed by a Deputy Director. The
upazila Statistical offices conduct its activities under district Statistical offices.
